At the turn of the 20th century, every maritime route out of Thoothukudi was monopolised by the British India Steam Navigation Company. Indian merchants were forced to pay exorbitant tariffs, sail under restrictive terms, and accept that they owned nothing of the trade infrastructure beneath them.
In October 1906, V. O. Chidambaram Pillai (V.O.C.) refused to negotiate for better concessions. He raised independent capital from local traders, founded the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company, and put Indian-flagged steamships on the Colombo line — proving that true sovereignty comes from owning the vessel, not begging the incumbent.
He did not ask for lower tariffs. He built the alternative — and inspired a nation to own its means of production.
